Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret (French, 1852-1929) was a hugely famous painter in his time. He started formally studying art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts when he was 17, and by the time he was 23, his art was appearing in the Paris salons. He painted many subjects, especially religious ones.
This gorgeous “Madonna in the Trellis" was painted in 1888. Dagnan-Bouveret was a naturalist painter with some later Symbolist influences. In this one, placing Mary and Jesus in the arbor is not only graceful, but the grapevines also allude to the blood of Christ and his crucifixion. Dagnan-Bouveret liked big paintings because the viewer would find more immediacy with life-size images. This painting was over six fee tall. It exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1889.
Sotheby’s has a nice article on this painting, "An Important Re-Discovery." MADONE À LA TREILLE. 76 by 51 1/2 in. It sold in 2016 for $300,000. It had been owned by William Randolph Hearst, straight from the Xanadu warehouse.
** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance.
There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper.
