Tradition has it that Joachim and Anne were childless into old age. But through their faith and holiness, they finally conceived the child destined to mother our Redeemer, Christ.
They dedicated her to God in a very special way, bringing her to the Temple at age three, there to serve God. This was not an uncommon practice at the time, and there seems to have been a hope that one of the little girls serving in the Temple would be the mother of the Messiah, although no one could have dreamed He would be not only a great man, but God Himself!
Sue portrays Anne teaching her little Mary to pray. This tapestry-like picture, is her "Frenchie" version of Anne, as the French have traditionally had a great devotion to Anne. The 2 Stars of David connote the Jewish heritage of Saints Joachim and Anne. The banner bearing the names of Anne and Mary is reminiscent of the Fleur de Lis, symbol of Mary's purity. The original was done in acrylics and colored pencil on art paper, and is not available for purchase.
IMPORTANT: Each of the 3 sizes indicates outside dimensions. There is a border of white left around the image, approximately 1 1/2" to 2" all around.
